Three Research Awards Distributed In November

With Your Generosity, we have granted $200,000!

Thanks to our generous community. The Gut Cancer Foundation opened a $200,000 grant round for the New Zealand research community earlier this year. We granted three awards in total and are really pleased that they all aim to improve quality of life for gut cancer patients where the treatments and symptoms are really tough. One of the awards supports an international trial through the Australiasian Gastro-Intestional Trials Group (AGITG) and the other two are New Zealand based studies.

Dr Angela Mweempwa was awarded a grant for PALEO which is an AGITG trial that aims to improve swallowing function in patients with oesophageal cancer to lengthen life expectancy and improve quality of life.

Dr Jane So and Dr Nicky Lawrence were awarded a grant for a feasibility study to determine whether the use of continuous ECG monitoring in real-life conditions (over two days, while receiving infusional 5-FU chemotherapy at home), can appropriately assess cardiac events and to determine the acceptability of this study to both patients and clinicians

Dr John Woodfield  and Kari Clifford  were awarded a grant for a study to assesses the effectiveness of the stomaguard in managing the symptoms of parastomal hernias which are a common complication following bowel cancer surgery.

While we are able to support three studies totaling $200,000, there is so much more we would like to fund -  we had around $1.3 million in applications which shows the desire and motivation for research here in Aotearoa.

Go to our research page for more detail on each of the studies.
